Professional background

Dr Mohamed Hussein is a consultant gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist at University College London Hospital, specialising in upper gastrointestinal (GI) disease, early cancer detection, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He graduated from St George’s University of London in 2010 and completed his gastroenterology training in North East London.

His clinical practice includes the full spectrum of therapeutic upper GI procedures, with particular focus on endoscopic resection and ablation for Barrett’s oesophagus, early oesophageal and gastric neoplasia, complex stricture management, and third-space endoscopy including POEM.

Dr Hussein completed a three-year interventional endoscopy fellowship and PhD at University College Hospital, focusing on artificial intelligence for early oesophageal neoplasia detection. He then undertook a post-CCT fellowship in advanced and third-space endoscopy at St Thomas’ Hospital, followed by 18 months as an oesophageal consultant at St Thomas’ Hospital, before his current appointment as consultant gastroenterologist at UCLH.

His PhD produced pioneering advances in AI-assisted oesophageal cancer detection, earning multiple national and international awards, numerous first-author publications, and contributing to the development of an AI device for Barrett’s neoplasia detection. He received multiple prizes including the inaugural UK Barrett’s Oesophagus Registry Prize from the British Society of Gastroenterology.

Dr Hussein has led major international research collaborations, presented at leading global meetings including the presidential plenary session at Digestive Disease Week, and has delivered extensive national and international teaching, serving as faculty on numerous endoscopy courses.
