Professional background

Dr. McNamara graduated with honours from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 2005. She pursued post-graduate neurology training in Dublin, Ireland, and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. Additionally, she completed a neuro-infection fellowship at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. 

During her training, Dr. McNamara was awarded a PhD from Trinity College Dublin for her research on cognitive impairment in individuals living with HIV infection. She also earned a post-graduate diploma in statistics. 

Since 2017, Dr. McNamara has served as a consultant neurologist at the Autonomic Unit. Her responsibilities include running specialist autonomic clinics, providing care to inpatients with autonomic disorders and neurological infections, and leading a weekly Autonomic Multidisciplinary Team (MDT). Since 2018, she runs a weekly general neurology clinic at Northwick Park Hospital. 

Dr. McNamara has managed the Neurological Infection clinic at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery since 2020. She is also a co-chair of the National Encephalitis Multidisciplinary Team meeting, which convenes weekly and accepts national referrals. Her expertise extends to providing neurology input for the UCLH Post COVID MDT and the Neuro-parasitology MDT.
