Professional background

Paul Harrow is a consultant gastroenterologist whose clinical work centres on complex conditions within gastroenterology, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

He trained in medicine at the Universities of Cambridge and UCL, qualifying in 2007, before undertaking a PhD at Queen Mary University of London. His doctoral research explored how environmental influences (including diet and bacterial exposure) affect intestinal health and the development of IBD.

Paul is the clinical lead for gastroenterology at University College Hospital in London. He is recognised as one of the leading IBD specialists in the city and oversees a large service responsible for the care of more than 6,200 adults and adolescents living with IBD.

His work also encompasses a wide range of GI conditions, including bowel manifestations in patients with arthritis or eye disease, immune‑mediated colitis associated with checkpoint inhibitors, and gastrointestinal involvement in graft‑versus‑host disease.

A highly experienced endoscopist, Paul performs and teaches both gastroscopy and colonoscopy at UCLH.

Alongside his clinical practice, Paul has a strong commitment to research. He acts as principal investigator for numerous studies covering Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, endoscopic innovation, artificial intelligence, nutrition, surgical approaches in IBD, and advanced imaging of the intestine. He holds an honorary lectureship at UCL, contributing to translational research and supervising PhD candidates.

Paul is the lead author of the regional IBD prescribing guidelines and is dedicated to ensuring his patients have access to the most up‑to‑date treatments in gastroenterology.
