Professional background

Dr Thomas Barber is an honorary consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, where he runs specialist clinics for patients with movement disorders. Dr Barber has particular interests in Parkinson’s disease, atypical Parkinsonian disorders, and treatment of movement disorders with botulinum toxin. He is also a consultant neurologist at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, where he manages inpatients and outpatients with all neurological disorders.

Dr Barber studied medicine at Clare College, University of Cambridge and Barts and The London School of Medicine. He undertook postgraduate neurology training through the NIHR clinical academic scheme in Oxford and obtained a DPhil in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences from Brasenose College, University of Oxford, for work studying clinical and neuroimaging characteristics of prodromal neurodegeneration in patients with REM sleep behaviour disorder. His research has been supported by fellowship awards from the Wellcome Trust and the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre.

Research interests

Dr Barber’s research activity has focused on characterising the prodromal phase of Parkinson’s disease and he has published many peer-reviewed papers in this field. He is interested in the neuropsychiatric aspects of prodromal disease and the use of novel neuroimaging biomarkers to detect early neurodegeneration. Dr Barber has also been involved in a number of clinical trials of novel therapeutic agents in Parkinson’s disease and is a member of the Edmund J Safra ACT-PD Consortium (Accelerating Clinical Trials in Parkinson’s Disease).
