Professional background

Dr Tom Bashford is an honorary consultant anaesthetist at UCLH and an honorary associate professor at UCL. His clinical work is based at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where he specialises in neuroanaesthesia, and he is the University Assistant Professor in Healthcare Systems at the University of Cambridge with a research interest in health systems design. He co-leads the Health Systems Design Group in the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, with the majority of his work focussed on resource-poor settings in the global south.

Dr Bashford holds degrees in biochemistry, medicine, and engineering from the universities of Oxford, London, and Cambridge respectively, qualifying clinically in 2007 from St George’s Hospital Medical School. He completed foundation and core training in London based at UCLH, working with VSO in Ethiopia during a career break in 2011, before moving to Cambridge as an Academic Clinical Fellow in 2013 to complete his speciality training in anaesthesia. After obtaining his PhD in 2021 he completed a Clinical Lecturer position at the University of Cambridge before being appointed to his substantive clinical and academic positions.

He has kept close links with UCLH and UCL since his early clinical training and collaborates with Professor Ramani Moonesinghe through the Centre for Perioperative Medicine. He is a co-investigator within the NIHR Global Health Research Group on Acquired Brain and Spine Injury and has worked with partners in Myanmar through the Cambridge-Yangon Trauma Intervention Project since 2013, and in Uganda through the Uganda Cambridge Partnership since 2020.
