Professional background

Professor Manjit Matharu is a professor of neurology at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, visiting professor of neurology at the Department of Neuromedicine and Movement sciences, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway and honorary consultant neurologist at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

He is the clinical and academic lead of the Headache and Facial Pain Group at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, respectively. Dr Matharu gained his BSc and MBChB from the University of Manchester in 1991 and 1994, respectively. He completed his general medical training in London leading up to obtaining the membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 1998. He subsequently obtained a PhD at The Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London on structural and functional neuroimaging in primary headache syndromes. He completed his residency in neurology at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The Royal London Hospital and Homerton Hospital in London in 2007.

His major research interests include migraine, trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias, facial pain, neurostimulation for intractable headaches, spontaneous intracranial hypotension and other headache disorders in hypermobility syndromes.

He has authored numerous scientific papers. Professor Matharu is a core team member of the International Headache Society (IHS) Regional Outreach Programme, President of the Medical Advisory Board of the CSF Leak Association and Chairperson of the UK CSF Leak Special Interest group. He was a member of the NICE guideline development committee for the headache guidelines.
