Professional background

Ricci Plastow is a hip and knee reconstructive surgeon at University College Hospital. He has worked at UCLH since 2020. He graduated from the Manchester University Medical school in 2008 with MBBS. His training in hip and knee surgery started in Manchester where he was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2017 and consultant certificate in 2019. He subsequently enhanced his experience with the internationally renowned fellowship programme in Vancouver, Canada. This allowed specialist knowledge and high volume surgery in soft tissue knee sports injuries. He returned to London to complete a fellowship specialising in arthroplasty and robotic surgery with Professor Haddad for one year.

He now specialises in lower limb arthroplasty surgery and all forms of knee surgery. This includes anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction; multiligament knee reconstruction, meniscal surgery; cartilage surgery including cartilage restoration treatments; joint preservation through osteotomy; patellofemoral stabilisation (kneecap stabilisation) partial joint replacement; total joint replacement; robotic assisted joint replacement.

He is research lead for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA) and Training lead for the Royal College of Surgeons Robotic and digital assisted surgery (RADAR) group progressing the use of technology within Orthopaedic surgical training in the NHS. He is the lower limb teaching lead for UCL MSc Orthopaedic course and has a passion for teaching students from medical school up to surgeons in training.

He has a keen interest in research looking at sports injuries in the elite athlete and progressing technology such as robotic surgery.
