Mr. Ruichong Ma is a consultant neurosurgeon with a subspecialist focus on neuro-oncology and epilepsy at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Mr. Ma earned his medical degree from the University of Oxford, where he also graduated with a first-class honours degree in medical sciences. He went on to complete his neurosurgery training at Oxford, where he also gained comprehensive experience in both clinical and academic settings. To further enhance his expertise, Mr. Ma undertook two prestigious Royal College of Surgeons Senior Clinical Fellowships—one in Neuro-oncology at Oxford, and another in complex epilepsy at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
He is skilled in a wide range of advance neuro-oncological techniques, including intraoperative mapping, awake craniotomy, and minimally invasive endoscopic-assisted procedures. Additionally, he is proficient in intraventricular endoscopy for the management of intraventricular tumours and cysts. As part of the multidisciplinary complex epilepsy team, Mr. Ma offers a full spectrum of surgical treatments for medically refractory epilepsy, such as vagal nerve stimulation, implantable stereo-EEG, and resective surgery.
Mr. Ma’s academic career is characterised by a deep commitment to advancing neurosurgical knowledge. He holds a DPhil in Medical Sciences from the University of Oxford, where he studied the immune microenvironment in glioblastoma. Following his DPhil, he was awarded an Academic Clinical Lectureship in Neurosurgery at Oxford. His research has been recognised with multiple awards and prizes, reflecting his dedication to furthering knowledge to improve patient outcomes. His ongoing work primarily focuses on maximising the extent of resection in intrinsic brain tumours while minimising postoperative morbidity.
