Professional background

Ashutosh Wechalekar is an honorary Consultant Haematologist at University College London Hospitals and Royal Free London NHS Trusts. He is Professor of Medicine and Haematology at University College London, UK, and is also a visiting Professor of Clinical Haematology at the University of Oxford.

His clinical and academic work focuses on complex plasma cell disorders, spanning multiple myeloma, systemic AL amyloidosis, monoclonal gammopathy–related disorders, and cardio-oncology in myeloma. He leads the UK national AL amyloidosis programme, providing clinical leadership, research direction, and service development for a highly specialised patient population. He leads the amyloidosis treatment program at UCLH. He is Director of the Jack O’Neil Amyloidosis Laboratory at RFL, a national and international reference centre for amyloid typing and genomic analysis, underpinning precision diagnosis and translational research.

His research interests include prognostication and novel therapies in AL amyloidosis including immunotherapy and advanced cellular therapies in plasma cell disorders. Additionally, he has special interest expanded spectrum of monoclonal gammopathies of clinical significance. He is chief investigator on multiple national and international clinical trials in amyloidosis.
