At the Pain Management Centre we manage a wide range of pain conditions. Our specialist areas of expertise in pain management include:

  • Complex spinal pain
  • Abdominopelvic pain
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Joint hypermobility syndrome
  • Facial pain
  • Pain associated with neurological conditions
  • Cancer-related pain
  • Neuromodulation
  • Pain related to surgical mesh implantation

Referred patients should be eligible for NHS care. We do not accept referrals from private practices or self-referrals from privately-paying patients.

All GP referrals to our service must be made via the e-Referrals System (e-RS).

Please be aware that we do not accept paper referrals from GP practices. We can be found on e-RS by searching by postcode, W1T 4AJ, and specialty, pain management.

If the referral is accepted the patient will be placed on the appropriate waiting list. If the referral is not accepted the referrer (GP) will be notified. To check the status of their referral, patients should check with their GP in the first instance.

We also accept referrals to our service from NHS Hospitals. These should be emailed to uclh.referrals.qsappointments@nhs.net

Post is often less reliable but if necessary paper referrals should be sent to:

The Pain Management Centre,
25 Cleveland Street,
London,
W1T 4AJ.

The Pain Management Centre provides secondary pain management services for patients in the local North Central London area and is an NHS England adult highly specialist pain management service. In line with British Pain Society guidance, patients who do not live locally should see their local pain service before being referred to access our tertiary, highly specialist services. This is to enable partnership working close to the patient’s home. Referrals are likely to be rejected if local services have not been accessed and/or community pain management plans not instituted.

How to find a local pain clinic.

If a referral is accepted the patient will be placed on the appropriate waiting list. If the referral is not accepted the referrer will be notified and provided with an explanation. To check the status of their referral, patients should check with the referring clinician in the first instance.

Facial pain referrals should be directed in the first instance to the facial pain clinic at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals

Headache referrals should be directed in the first instance to the headache service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Please note the Pain Management Centre does not accept referrals for headache disorders.

We require the following clinical information as per the Faculty of Pain Medicine guidelines

  1. Full information (e.g. letters, notes, procedures undertaken) from previous pain services and relevant specialities (e.g. gynaecology, colorectal surgery, urology, gastroenterology, psychiatry)
  2. Outcomes (e.g. scan reports) from previous investigations related to the pain problem
  3. Full medication history including previous medications that have been tried

Patients should be fully assessed by a local doctor-led pain service as per NICE guidelines before referral to this highly specialist pain service. A management plan should be initiated, preferably including physiotherapy and psychology where available. If local pain services are unable to do this the reasons must be clearly documented in the referral.

Referrals for pain related to surgical mesh implantation should be made via the London Complex Mesh Centre.

If you are a UCLH clinician with access to Epic, please refer by placing an ‘outpatient referral for cancer pain interventions (CPI)’ ambulatory order and filling in the required information.

If you do not have access to Epic, please complete this referral form. Please note you will need to be logged into an NHS.net account in order to access this link. If you do not have access to an NHS.net account, please email the Cancer Pain Interventions Team (uclh.cpi@nhs.net) and we will send you a copy.

Please be aware that we only accept referrals from an appropriate clinician and patients are unable to self-refer to this service.
