Here is some advice to help you care for your wound after head and neck surgery. We explain how to keep your wound clean and what to look out for at home. If you have any questions, or if you are worried about anything, contact your healthcare team.

Does my wound need a dressing?

If your wound is wet or has any discharge, it needs a dressing.

Once the wound is dry and a scab has formed, a dressing is no longer needed. It’s best to let it air out.

Your surgical team will advise you before you go home.

How do I keep my wound clean?

To clean your wound, use fresh water only. After cleaning, gently pat it dry with gauze, a clean towel or a flannel.

Do

  • Always wash your hands before cleaning or dressing your wound.
  • Keep the wound clean and dry.
  • Use only water to clean it.
  • Leave the wound open to air if it is dry.
  • Cover the wound with a dressing if it’s wet or has discharge.

 Do not

  • Do not soak your wound.
  • Do not use soap or antiseptic on your wound.
  • Do not touch your wound unless cleaning it, as this can cause infection.

Signs of infection to look out for

Contact your clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or GP without delay if:

  • The skin around your wound is red, sore, hot or swollen.
  • There is liquid coming from your wound (often green or yellow pus).
  • Your wound has opened up.
  • You feel unwell or have a fever.
  • You are unsure if your wound is infected.

What if I need help at home with my wound?

Most wounds heal well with basic care within four to six weeks.

If your wound is slow to heal, you may need extra help:

  • We may ask you to send photo updates of your wound and advise you how to manage this at home.
  • We may ask you to visit the practice nurse at your GP surgery for a dressing change.
  • We may invite you to our wound clinic for more dressings and support.
