What is a rapid diagnostic centre?

A rapid diagnostic centre is a one-stop service to find a cause for symptoms that your GP is worried about. The service aims to complete testing and diagnosis as quickly as possible. We can make referrals to specialist areas for
treatment or for further assessment.

Why am I being referred urgently?

While your symptoms may be caused by a number of common conditions, they could also be signs of cancer. An urgent referral for assessment does not always mean that you have cancer. If you do have cancer, finding it early makes treatment much more successful.

Your appointment

Your appointment could be a consultation with a doctor or tests to help diagnose the cause of your symptoms. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic we are doing many consultations over the telephone. However, you may be asked to come to the hospital for a consultation in person.

We will give you information about the time and location of the consultation and how to prepare at the time your consultation is confirmed. There is information on our website about what we are doing to keep you safe when you come to the hospital.

After your appointment

We will review the results of any tests or investigation you have and give you the results as soon as we can, sometimes on the same day.

If you are diagnosed with cancer or another condition we will give you information about what will happen next and refer you on to the appropriate service. It is not always possible to find the cause of your symptoms and we may refer you back to your GP if we cannot help.
