We know being in hospital can feel stressful. At UCL Hospitals, we aim to make your stay as comfortable as possible while providing the best care we can.
This page gives essential information for you, your family, and your friends about your stay on T08.
If you have questions or concerns, please speak to a member of the ward team.
T08 is in the University College Hospital Tower on the 8th Floor.
Contact us: Call 020 3447 0800
Visiting hours: 10:00am to 08:00pm
Visitors under 16 must be with an adult. To protect everyone, do not visit the ward if you have any of the following:
- a high temperature
- respiratory symptoms
- cold or flu
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
If you are unsure about visiting, please call us.
Ward Structure
T08 is comprised of a mixture of bay beds and side rooms. To keep everyone safe, you may need to move beds, stay in a side room to stop infections from spreading, or be de-isolated from a side room to allow suspected infections to be isolated. Our Infection Control team helps make these decisions.
At UCLH, we treat our staff with courtesy and kindness. Keeping those who work at UCLH safe while they work is important to us.
Our team includes:
- doctors
- nurses
- healthcare assistants
- physiotherapists
- occupational therapists
- dieticians
- phlebotomists
- house keepers
- security
- porters
- administrators
- pharmacists
- catering Staff
And more.
Medical Staff
Our ward has four medical teams:
- Infectious Diseases
- Tropical Diseases
- Respiratory
- Rheumatology
You may be on our ward under a different medical team. You can ask your doctor if you would like to know more.
A member of your medical team will visit you at least once daily.
Nursing staff
You will have a nurse each shift who will be your first point of contact.
The day shift is 7:45am to 8:45pm with a handover period with the night staff.
We have 75 Nurses and Healthcare Assistants including: four Deputy Ward Sisters, two Ward Sisters, and a Matron.
A member of the nursing team will regularly check your skin and reposition you throughout the day. This is to prevent pressure ulcers.
If you need help, use the call bell next to your bed.
Martha’s rule helps patients, families, and carers raise their concerns and access a review from the critical care team.
The nursing team will ask you how you are feeling at the start of their shift. Please escalate any concerns to your nurse or the nurse in charge.
If you are still worried and need medical help, call: 07816 196 122.
We start planning your discharge early in your stay. Our nursing, medical, and therapy teams will work with our discharge team to arrange any future care you need.
The day before your discharge
A staff member will ask how you plan to get home.
Hospital transport is only available for certain patients, such as those who:
- have mobility issues
- have cognitive issues, like dementia
- need oxygen during travel
Your doctor may use criteria-led discharge, which allows you to leave as soon as certain conditions are met – without another medical review.
The day of your discharge
On the day of your discharge, you will go to the discharge lounge to wait for your medications and/or your transport.
We aim to discharge you by 12pm.
Patient flow
The ward will discharge you as soon as appropriate.
An early discharge helps:
- patients waiting for a bed in the Emergency Department
- patients coming in for an operation
- patients waiting for an ambulance
This is ‘patient flow’. We need good patient flow to provide great-quality patient care.
The Patient Lounge
The patient lounge is on the ground floor of the hospital. Nurses provide care and support to patients waiting to go home.
You will wait in the lounge for medication, transport, your family, and much more. The lounge provides food and drinks.
This helps us improve patient flow and give the bed as soon as possible to the patient waiting in the Emergency Department.
If you have any questions about patient flow and the lounge, speak to a staff member of the ward.
Patient property
Please keep an awareness of any personal property you have on the ward.
Please inform staff of any valuables you have with you on the ward. Our staff can store these safely during your inpatient stay and return them on discharge.
Once you are discharged a new patient will be moved into your bed and we may not be able to locate anything that is left behind, especially after extended periods of time following your discharge.
We welcome visitors on the ward, but we know not everyone can visit in person.
If your family would like updates on your condition, they can call the ward administrators at 020 3447 0800.
We cannot share any details that violate data protection rules.
