UCLH is taking proactive and sensible steps to ensure that our maternity team can support pregnant women, pregnant people and their babies in the local area, as well as those needing specialist care, by providing the right care and support within the capacity of our existing service.
In recent years, our maternity services have experienced an increase in maternity bookings and complex births, despite a national decline in the birth rate.
The changes we are implementing will help ensure that our maternity team can support pregnant people and their babies in the local area, as well as those needing specialist care, by providing the right care and support within the capacity of our existing service.
What is changing?
We are limiting routine self-referrals to our NHS maternity unit to residents living, or registered with a GP, in one of the five north central London boroughs of Camden, Islington, Haringey, Barnet and Enfield.
In addition to these five boroughs, we are also accepting self-referrals from UCLH’s ‘catchment’ area which includes parts of Westminster closest to UCLH and can be seen on this map. Please click the magnifying glass which is top left and enter your postcode to check if you live in the UCLH local catchment area.
These measures will be in place for the next 18 months and will be reviewed at regular intervals.
