Consultant outpatient appointments and clinical advice
For emergency admissions or urgent clinical advice, contact the UCLH switchboard at 020 3456 7890 and ask for the on-call tropical medicine registrar (24-hour service).
We accept the following as emergency or routine admissions:
- Adult patients with proven or suspected tropical diseases
- Adult patients with proven or suspected infectious diseases, regardless of travel history
- Adult patients for investigation of pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO), regardless of travel history
Appointments are by GP referral only. Our consultants specialise in fields such as parasitology, Hansen’s disease (leprosy), fungal infections, bites and stings, and tropical dermatology. Referrals can be made to named consultants or triaged to the most appropriate consultant.
All clinics are held in the Mortimer Market building.
Patients may be seen within 24 hours as emergencies. Those who have returned from the tropics in the last six months and are unwell with fevers, bloody diarrhoea or rash may refer themselves as emergency attenders during normal outpatient clinic times (9 am - 4 pm, weekdays) at HTD, Mortimer Market.
Out of hours (after 4 pm) or at weekends and/or bank holidays emergency attenders should go to the UCLH emergency department.
Emergency walk-in clinic
The emergency walk-in clinic is an adult clinic for travellers who have returned from the tropics within the last 6 months and are recently unwell with conditions such as fever, diarrhoea, or rash.
We also see patients who have had a potential exposure to rabies and will administer post-exposure rabies treatment if needed after a risk assessment.
